The Rolex Explorer II reference 216570 was released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the model and is a tribute to the original Rolex Explorer reference 1655. What makes this Rolex Explorer II so interesting is the engraving found on its case, which is a rare commission fulfilled by the modern Rolex brand. The watches were made available by Rolex in London for serving members of the British Special Air Service, a special forces unit in the British Army. Founded in 1941, the regiment continues to be well-respected and carry out a range of highly sensitive and secretive operations.
The caseback features the winged dagger emblem of the division, with the regiment’s name, “22 Special Air Service”, similarly engraved. The caseback also features the serving member’s initials, along with their serial number. The SAS motto, “Who Dares Wins” is engraved on the side of the case.
